Sneak peak

at the commission I'm currently working on:

I'm doing a logo+other projects consisting of
9 dragons, so took a few days researching the
Chinese legendary 9 dragons.
Above are Bixi and Chiwen, they have
physical characteristic of a turtle and hawk.

I was out of my house, so no illustration of the
day. Instead, took a few reference of bonfires.

Modified the design in the background.
...A lot of gradient is being used here,
my professors will probably found my
house and burn it down.

Logo

So I haven't made too much progress in the illustration,
and instead I worked on my story's logo design.
I haven't worked on it (forgot about it) since I posted
on this blog around 4/13.
The spirally design behind the type is FPO, I'll eventually
design that myself.

Tree

As usual, starting from the background.
For the large tree in the foreground, I am
using a tree in Scotland as a reference.
They've got bug roots like this one.

morning fog

The amount of fog was just right to create
illusion of sun rays.

Other colors

Other colors that I considered about using.
This probably conveys the rain message
better, but didn't make the illustration
exciting, so I raised the contrast.

blue vs purple

atmospheric color was the biggest element
that took a while to decide.
Blue made it look more like "night" instead
of heavy rain, so I went with the purple
color.

Completely wasted a day

by trying to upgrade my internet security.
Every year, it seems like I spend hours
(literally hours) trying to get it right.

Staring at the storm..

as a reference for this illustration.
I'm hoping to find a good solution to rendering
rain without using lines or rain drops.

HP update

In few minutes, I will be updating my site... a piece
that I thought I added, but apparently forgot to
do so during the winter break.

It was a day off, but it had to be a SEVERE
THUNDER STORM!!!!!!!!
I used my laptop unplugged, so couldn't
get too far of this piece because of priority issue...

Looked back at the "good" memories of the
raining windy city. I guess the four years
of commute helped me out in some shape.

Chose the straight on view, kind of going for the
gust of wind during the rain. Need to work on the
figure to
1. make it look more like kids
2. Their sitting in rain.
...Lot of work.

Rough

of the same series as what I've been working on lately,
but instead with different characters. I need to develop
more of the story around the main character, too.

The above depicts the four main children (that loves to
play with the main character) avoiding rain under a tree.
Drawn in three different perspective. Worm, bird and
straight on.

Intern

It's already been a month since I started as an interning.
I love the job, it feels great being needed by different
departments. The only problem is, the days I work there
I work whole day, so I can't really work on my personal
illustrations hence I haven't been uploading many drawings
lately. (Well, this past few weeks it was crazy getting the
exhibition ready)
And I signed the confidentiality contract so I can't show those
off until they are actually out in market. Although I guess
I need to take some break from drawing... As I seriously haven't
been able to come up with a satisfying idea for something new.

I'll end today's article with a small thing that I was thinking
during work. I've been using photoshop for its true purposes,
and felt so weird doing so. Photo manipulation instead of
painting with it...(I actually don't use photoshop to paint much,
you get the drift)
I was like, "Man, I want to draw this kid with the toy instead of
fixing this photographer's work who didn't give it too much thought
into composition and design." After all, I am an Illustrator.

HP Update

Older pieces done during school, but still in the process
of uploading them into my web site.
Today's update: Calendar illustrations depicting music genres.

Pieces sold!!

Finally got past the opening reception, and now I'm
extremely tired... It turned out to be a successful
show, at least for me. The past week I feel like running
around every where trying to get this show together,
and was worth it.

Nervous, but I hope it goes well.

Labels

Pretty much all I did other than working was making the
labels for our show. I thought I was finished and printed
them out. Now I need to create another one and fix the
stupid error that I've found...

Gallery

has the pieces hung on the wall, and the last thing we need
to do is to prepare a label, and some stands to put our
portfolios. Now it's getting less stressful...

Fifth

In order to do a fill-in for our show, I chose to prepare a fifth
piece. It's part of my Ladybird series, but I didn't include it
because the color scheme was different from the other four.

Bad weather= amazing photo day

Clouds the of or after the storm is the best time for me to
take photos of the cloud formation for future references.
Didn't have a good day, but it feels the sky washed it away
for me.

Let the poison out

Wow, I can't believe how much I can't draw right now.
Well at least stuff that I want to draw isn't coming out.
Any thing for work, no problem. It's probably the stress
from the show, so hopefully when that's done everything
will go back to normal.

Tired...

My friends and I went to the gallery to put the
pieces up on the wall. We ended up getting
half of them put up, and the rest should be
done Wednesday. Above is just a snap shot of
the space.

Tonight

was Employer Night, and was able to meet a lot of professionals
in the field. Also got amazing suggestions for my portfolio and
as my friend stated, "it feels like it was a fifth year participating
in this event."

too tired to scan it. (I got home around 11 and working tomorrow)

Started

a sketch for a new piece. I'm not satisfied with the thumbnail
at this point, will be trying to come up with more tomorrow...

Framed

I just randomly chose to put a filter over the other
three pieces. (Although for those who know me,
